There has been a change in British driving culture.<\/strong>
\nShould every road user reflect upon this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quiet shift we rarely talk about<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are things that we rarely want to talk about, or even admit to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been noticed by all of us, some more than others, especially those of us that have been road users for many years, and in many different formats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of many years, the whole culture of road use and overall driving within the United Kingdom has steadily shifted \u2014 and not for the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has not happened suddenly.
\nIt has not been a dramatic alteration.
\nIt has been happening very quietly.
\nIt has been gradually happening over the course of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has happened by one overlooked rule and one very impatient action at a time, slowly chipping away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Highway Code was lived, not quoted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not too long ago, not in the very distant past, there was a period when quoting the Highway Code was not something that people did \u2014 we used this code and drove by it. In fact, primarily when on the road, as road users we lived by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Drivers allowed space.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Courtesy at junctions was instinctive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Indicators were used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • People took pride in being predictable, steady and therefore safe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The rules within the Highway Code were not viewed as restrictions but regarded as a shared understanding that kept everyone safe and protected on our road network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The atmosphere on today\u2019s roads<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The atmosphere on our road network today does feel very noticeably different. It has changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I agree that it\u2019s not with everyone, and it is not everywhere. However, it is enough for the changes to be noticed and felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Behaviours that were once seen as reckless and indeed downright dangerous are now often regarded as normal and therefore treated as routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Mobile devices used whilst driving, once regarded as unthinkable, now compete for attention with the driving and the road itself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Amber lights are seen as an opportunity to squeeze through the gap.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Tailgating is no longer regarded as dangerous. In fact, it is so common that it is not even regarded as a threat to safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The guiding force for far too many drivers \u2014 more than any other influence \u2014 is now impatience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Impatience has quietly become one of the most dangerous forces on our roads.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

      Even experienced, conscientious and cautious drivers feel it \u2014 the moment someone pushes too hard, sits too close to your rear, cuts you up, pushes in or expresses frustration all because another driver has chosen safety over speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Cyclists feel it too \u2014 being pushed off the road, not being noticed or being ignored at junctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The impossible position of the learner driver<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The learner driver has no chance. As driving instructors, we are educating them in what should be done, and all the time they see other \u201clicence holders\u201d doing exactly what we tell them \u2014 and show them in the Highway Code \u2014 not to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Why this shift didn\u2019t happen in isolation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      This shift, however, has not happened in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      There is now less visible road policing, reducing the natural deterrent that once encouraged discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Long test waiting times have created additional pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      There are driving schools that promise fast, cheap routes to a licence. This has unintentionally reinforced the idea that competence can be rushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      There are many parents, often unknowingly, who add pressure by focusing on passing rather than learning \u2014 forgetting that learning will help to keep their children alive on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The values that still matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Yet beneath all of this, one truth still \u2014 and always will \u2014 remain unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The behaviour we all show behind the wheel still matters more than any trend, shortcut or cultural shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Respect for all others on the road is not old fashioned; it will save lives.
      Courtesy is not outdated; it is a life changer.
      Patience is not weakness; it is fundamental to road safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      What real confidence behind the wheel looks like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      It is a fact that real confidence is not loud.
      Real confidence is not forceful.
      Real confidence does not rely on intimidation or speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Real confidence is measured quietly.
      Real confidence gives one the ability to remain calm when others are not.
      Real confidence is the discipline to follow the Highway Code even when others ignore it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It is the courage to protect your space, your judgement and your safety without being drawn into the behaviour around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Rebuilding driving culture, one decision at a time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Confidence can be taught again.
      Confidence can be modelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It can be rebuilt in every new learner \u2014 or in any driver who enters the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We can demonstrate it at every junction, at every roundabout, and in every difficult moment where there is a choice between calm and conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The overall landscape may have changed \u2014 but our values do not have to change with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Every careful driver has the ability to make a difference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Every respectful decision still shapes the culture around us.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Every example of calm driving reminds others that standards matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Would it not be great to be the driver who steadies the environment rather than adds to the noise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • To be the reminder that safety still comes before speed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • To be the reason the next person behind you feels calmer, not pressured.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • To be the reason someone gets home safely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Safe driving is not a skill you learn once.
          It is a habit you maintain forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
